The Op
Mid-80s timeframe.
Shortly after Grenada’s independence from the UK, the communist New Jewel Movement seized power in a coup and suspended the constitution and detained several political prisoners. In September 1983, an internal power struggle began within the communist government. The dictator was put under house arrest by his own party’s Central Committee.
When his secret detention became widely known, he was freed by a crowd of his supporters, after which a confrontation ensued at military headquarters between Grenadian soldiers loyal to the new leader, and civilians supporting the former dictator.
After an appeal for help from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, the US mounted a not insignificant military action due to “concerns over the 600 U.S. medical students on the island”.
The first boots on the ground in Grenada is the Marine Force Recon squad. Their job is to find the medical students and get them safely to the exfil location.
